Cher from Clueless’ Greatest Fashion Hits – Still Looking Fly 20 Years Later!
As Alexa Chung this week admitted to being inspired for her new app by Cher’s computerized wardrobe in Clueless, we look at five of the outfits fashion’s favourite film heroine wore in 1995 that still, amazingly, work for today’s wardrobes.
That Alaia dress: Brilliantly inappropriately worn to a party in the least designer-friendly part of LA, Cher is the belle of the ball before she’s mugged and held at gunpoint, shouting to deaf ears ‘But it’s an ALAIA!’. The Little Red Dress is still a stunning alternative to the LBD, and looks great whether it’s summer or winter. Recently immortalised again by Reformation in an off the shoulder version (Pin Sykes looks Cher levels of cute in hers). Get yours at Karen Millen on the high street – in the sale now onStylight:
T-shirt and dresses combo: A sexy 90’s Classic (see also Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone in a 90’s Aerosmith video, looking amazingly cool), this spawned a million TopShop replica outfits back in the day. Today this is still a fresh look, especially when worn with an apron / dungaree style dress and birkenstocks or ankle boots. The dress below if great for the late summer sun – from Pepe Jeans at Stylight:
The Checked kilt: Never knowingly out of fashion – it still says ‘school girl with a rebellious edge’. Vivienne Westwood has long used the tartan kilt as a signature design, and TopShop and River Island do versions that looks great with all styles of autumn/winter boots. For a statement worthy of Cher, try this bright blue version from House of Holland, available at Stylight:
The ‘Nightie’ slip dress: Cher’s father is none too impressed where she sneaks out of the door on a date with Christian in her barely-there Calvin Klein slip dress. This is a look that still wows every time, on a date, or even at Wimbledon, where Victoria Beckham wore hers two years ago. Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang and at the more affordable end, ASOS and TopShop do brilliant midi and longer length versions which look slightly more 2015. This blue stunner is from Alexander Wang:
Mohair jumpers: Cher was deeply fond of a fluffy jumper and kilt combination, often with a mohair in a pastel shade. Mohair is not to everyone’s taste, but it’s a classy and expensive-looking option and looks good in the workplace in the colder months. This AX Paris white mohair jumper is a smart and neutral option:
